Catalonia, on alert for a great storm of rain and wind

Catalonia is experiencing an exceptional weekend due to a severe storm that has forced the paralysis of a large part of the country. From eight o'clock on Saturday evening until two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, mobility and many of the planned activities have been restricted in about twenty counties due to the threat of a 'medicane', a Mediterranean mini-hurricane that can be very violent and which will become more frequent due to the climate crisis. Torrential rains and strong winds have forced the activation of maximum alert on the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona, Tarragona, and Girona, as well as in the counties of Osona and Moianès, where flooding has occurred and there have been people who have been trapped and unable to return home. Sants station will be open all night and people who need to will be allowed to stay there to sleep.

The historic rain storm continues to discharge in the northeast of the country

The red alert remains activated due to the episode of torrential rain in regions of the coast, the pre-coastal area and the northeast of the country. An extraordinary convective mesoscale system has generated torrential rains, especially in the pre-coastal and central coastal areas, with accumulated amounts up to 6 am this morning of 248 l/m 2 2 in Granollers . Finally, the medicane (Mediterranean mini-hurricane) did not form, but, just as the models indicated, the accumulated rainfall amounts have been historic. Notable are the 68 l/m² that fell this morning in just half an hour in Granollers, a figure of extraordinary torrential intensity. The storm system also hit the Maresme and the Western and Eastern Vallès where 244 l/m 2 accumulated in Mataró or 202 2 l/m 2 at Puig Sesolles. In Pineda de Mar, several rescues were carried out in ground floors and in vehicles trapped by the water, and in the city of Barcelona (can Bruixa) the record for accumulated precipitation in 24 hours (data since 1914) was broken, with a total of 202 l/m 2 .
