Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has issued a stark warning over the continued militarisation of Ukraine, arguing that the conflict risks escalating into a wider global confrontation. Speaking in Bratislava, Fico claimed that a major opportunity to end the Ukraine war was lost in April 2022, accusing Western powers of preventing Kyiv from signing a potential agreement with Russia. Fico said Western governments had wrongly believed that sustained military, political and financial support for Ukraine could weaken Russia, arguing that the strategy has failed while the West continues to “add fuel to the war.” His remarks have reignited the contentious debate over the failed 2022 peace negotiations and the role of Western powers in the conflict.
