An insurance company rejected a Rs 3.2 lakh mediclaim by calling a weight loss surgery an obesity treatment excluded under the policy. The Ernakulam consumer commission found the surgery was meant to treat high blood pressure, weight gain and knee problems together, and ruled that the insurer had no medical evidence to justify its rejection. The commission ordered the company to pay Rs 3,50,266 in total, covering the treatment cost, compensation and case expenses
