India just raised more than $136 billion from its own diaspora. The rupee was under pressure. Foreign money had slowed. So the RBI turned to Indians living abroad - and the money came in so fast the window closed a month early. The surprise is not only the size. In 2013, India’s extra return over the US was much bigger. In 2026 the gap was about half. And still far more money arrived. So the rate is not the whole story. India has won the diaspora’s trust to deposit their hard-earned dollars. But now the next act in India's relationship with its diaspora- because putting dollars in an Indian bank is one thing. Putting savings into an Indian business or property is a much bigger vote of confidence - and that's where the gap still has to be bridged. Can India become a place where the diaspora will not only park money, but plant it?
