BAGUIO CITY — Strengthening surveillance, expanding mosquito-control initiatives, and mobilizing barangay (villages) are among the measures being pursued by the Baguio City Anti-Mosquito-Borne Diseases Committee (BCABDC) to combat dengue. Health officials discussed the measures, as well as the Summer Capital’s epidemiological situation and planned upcoming interventions, during their third-quarter meeting on Oct. 9, 2026. The meeting brought together representatives from government agencies, health institutions, local communities and the academe to discuss dengue trends, identify high-risk areas and strengthen coordinated efforts against mosquito-borne diseases. Alexander Baday, Entomologist III of the Department of Health-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CHD-CAR), presented updates on the city’s dengue situation, including recent epidemiological trends, high-risk areas, and developments in arboviral disease (AVD) and general disease surveillance. Meanwhile, Miller Balisongen, dengue program coordinator and sanitary inspector IV of the City Health Services Office (CHSO), outlined ongoing programs and upcoming activities aimed at improving dengue prevention and control in Baguio. Among the initiatives highlighted was the launch of the search for the “Top Rated Barangay for Dengue Prevention and Control Program, Best Practices and Success Stories,” which seeks to recognize barangay that demonstrate leadership and effective practices in community-based mosquito control. Balisongen cited the continued implementation of City Ordinance 10, Series of 2025, alongside the expansion of the Ovicidal-Larvicidal (OL) Trap Project and the Wolbachia Initiative in high-risk communities. Also known as the Consolidated Anti-Mosquito-Borne Diseases Ordinance of the City of Baguio, the measure provides the framework for multisectoral coordination in strengthening local vector-control measures and public health initiatives.
