Cassandra Templora carries Filipino pride into her pursuit of medicine

For Cassandra Kimberly Templora, graduating from the University of San Francisco (USF) was more than earning a degree. It was a milestone shared with the family and community that supported her as she pursued her education abroad. Templora graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in gerontology, the study of aging, becoming the first in her family to graduate from a foreign university. She is now pursuing her medical education at the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery as a first-year student. Her decision to pursue medicine grew from a lifelong interest in science. “Growing up, I’ve always been interested in sciences and whatever biological topics we did,” Templora said, recalling her fascination with organisms and how their body systems work together. Her minor in gerontology was equally personal. Raised in a Filipino culture that places great value on respect and care for elders, Templora wanted to better understand aging from both psychological and physiological perspectives. College also gave her opportunities to bring Filipino culture into campus life. At USF, Templora became active in Kasamahan, the university’s Filipino-American student organization. She began as a first-year representative before becoming community and political affairs co-director. In that role, she helped organize Pilipino-American History Month activities and Marahuyo, a festival inspired by Filipino fiestas that brought Filipino businesses and cultural performances to campus. As a junior, she led the Skit Committee for Philippine Cultural Night, overseeing the writing, auditions and rehearsals for a production that shared Filipino stories with hundreds of students. She also performed in the annual skit throughout her four years. Beyond Kasamahan, she served as vice president of finance and leadership of the Culturally-Focused Clubs Council. She later became an international student orientation guide, welcoming new students to the university. Balancing her studies with these numerous commitments was one of her biggest challenges. “I never wanted to limit myself but I also understood that I had responsibilities I needed to accomplish,” she said. Over time, she learned to balance those responsibilities while remaining committed to the people and causes that mattered to her. Throughout these experiences, her mother, aesthetic and medical doctor Iris Templora, has been a constant source of encouragement. “My mom has always been my inspiration and driving force in whatever I do,” Templora said. “She’s always been there to support me and push me out of my comfort zone. She’s my ultimate cheerleader!” As she begins medical school, Templora also recognizes the wider circle of people who helped her reach this point. “As the first one in my family to graduate from a foreign university, this accomplishment is not only my own but also of the village that helped raise me,” she said. Her advice to other Filipino students is simple: “Push yourself out of your comfort zone, do it afraid if you have to; because, before you know it, your ‘One day’ is now your ‘Day one.’”

Barça-Getafe League Guide: where to watch it, schedule and probable lineups

Without Raphinha, the league's top scorer with twelve goals and out for at least two matches due to a muscle edema in his right thigh sustained with Brazil, but with Joan Garcia back, Barça resumes the league this Saturday against Getafe. If they win, they will equal the best league start in the club's history: eight victories in eight matchdays, like Tata Martino's Barça in 2013-14.
