What you should know before voting for Yellowknife school trustees

The school trustee election has long coincided with the municipal election, although often draws less attention. For the first time in 15 years residents will be able to fill out their ballot for both mayor, city council and the school trustees at the same voting booth. This was done in an effort to make voting easier.

British students, like their French peers, have been known to challenge authority

Pete Crockett says the history of British education is not simply one of children dutifully accepting adult instruction, while Simon Dawson says Kitty Sayers misses the mark when describing English attitudes. Plus a letter from Kevin Donnelly Reading Kitty Sayers’ interesting article, I was reminded of the rich, and perhaps too easily forgotten, history of direct action by British schoolchildren (Angry French students take to the streets. British students don’t – and I think I know why, 10 October). Far from being historically meek or unquestioningly compliant, they have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for challenging authority. At Marlborough college, troops were once summoned to dislodge rebellious pupils occupying an island in the school grounds. In the late 1700s, Winchester college experienced several rebellions. The resignation as a gesticulatory act

We usually consider resignations an honorable (and rare) gesture but they are often more cosmetic than decisive. In the case of the socialists' spokesperson, it is obvious that it is an aesthetic issue: it looks bad for someone to come out making grand proclamations in favor of tenants while their partner is actively pursuing evictions in the courts and speculating in the real estate casino, where the bank also always wins. Now, I would bet a pea, or a penthouse in Madrid if I had one, that she must not be the only politician caught in this contradiction. The thing is not to get caught. From there, the day's press made it evident that the situation was a lose-lose for Sánchez. And the right-wing newspapers fell into amusing contradictions. For example, El Mundo headlined: “Hypocrisy over housing wipes out the PSOE spokesperson” and said in a subtitle that “Sánchez asked her to stay because she was 'a great asset' to the party”. According to this thesis, it is Montse Mínguez who decides to quit, knowing that she has become a burden. And the newspaper, of course, tried to attach this dead weight to the leader of the PSOE, to see if there is any luck and he sinks with her in the process. On the other hand, the ABCexecuted a different (and incompatible) strategy. On the front page they wrote: “Sánchez sacrifices the PSOE spokesperson to cover up the housing fiasco”. Here they did not buy that the Spanish president wanted to retain her and they portrayed him with the executioner's axe, merciless, capable of decapitating one of his own to survive another day and divert the focus from the umpteenth scandal.

The foundation that gives a second life to used clothing

Training as a tool for insertion. The Formació i Treball Foundation is quite an institution in Catalonia. It was founded in 1992 by Caritas and its main objective is to train people at risk of social exclusion so that they can subsequently enter the labor market. Its model is radically opposed to that of traditional companies: while normally the goal is to retain talent, the foundation provides jobs to hundreds of people so that they can later work in conventional companies. "Our reason for being is the labor insertion of people," assures the president of the entity, Misi Borràs, to Companies, who also explains that they "emancipated" themselves from Caritas.

Red Cross, DepEd tie up for emergency readiness

THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Department of Education (DepEd) announced Friday their partnership for school emergency readiness. The emergency preparedness plan includes promoting mental health awareness, as well as peer support and humanitarian values among students, amid concerns over a worsening El Niño and increasingly severe disasters. The Red Cross Youth will train students in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and disaster risk reduction and management. “By strengthening our partnership with DepEd, we can make schools safer and ensure that teachers and students are better prepared for emergencies and disasters,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said. Education Secretary Sonny Angara said schools should develop students beyond academic achievement, and foster responsibility and a willingness to serve others among them. “We need to have well-rounded students. The culture of preparedness, volunteerism and humanitarianism is something the world needs now,” Angara said.

DepEd seeks P150B for unfunded learning programs

THE Department of Education (DepEd) has sought the Senate’s intervention to restore and augment its funding under the 2027 national budget, citing key operational gaps and unfunded learning programs. Under the current draft of the General Appropriations Bill, DepEd’s allocation stands at P967.23 billion — a reduction of P6.17 billion from the P969.79 billion originally proposed under the National Expenditure Program. In response to the cut, Education Secretary Sonny Angara presented a P149.67 billion total request, comprising of a P147.93 billion “wishlist” for DepEd and P1.74 billion for its attached agencies. The amount, he said, covers personnel improvement (P52.11 billion), classroom infrastructure and school security (P41.06 billion), learner support and well-being (P35.92 billion), learning recovery (P15.68 billion), inclusive education (P833.8 million), and governance and innovation (P330 million). The additional P1.74 billion will be used for operational and capital funds of DepEd’s attached agencies, including the National Book Development Board, National Council for Children’s Television, National Museum of the Philippines, Philippine High School for the Arts, National Academy of Sports, and Teacher Education Council. Senate Committee on Basic Education Chairman Sen. Bam Aquino backed the appeal, pledging to champion increased allocations during Senate budget deliberations.
