BACOLOD CITY — A total of 2,820 sugarcane workers and farmers affected by the red-striped soft scale insect (RSSI) infestation in Bacolod City received emergency cash assistance from the government. The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) completed a two-day payout over the weekend under its Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (Uplift) program. Each of the 2,820 beneficiaries received P10,325 in financial aid. On the first day, 1,367 recipients received cash aid, amounting to P14.1 million. On the second day, 1,453 more get assistance, bringing the total distribution to more than P29 million. The assistance comes two months after Bacolod City was placed under a state of calamity in August when Mayor Greg Gasataya reported that the RSSI had damaged around 2,000 hectares of sugar farms, or nearly 65 percent of the city's total sugarcane plantations. The pest, which feeds on plant sap and spreads damaging mold, has devastated crops and threatened the livelihoods of thousands of families. "This aid is our way of standing with our sugar industry families as they recover and rebuild," DSWD-NIR said. The agency said the cash support is intended to cover immediate daily needs while farmers prepare for the next planting season and work to restore their fields.
