A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta Platforms to pay an additional $567 million to address harm to children in the state, following a jury finding that Meta's social media platforms "substantially contributed to a public nuisance." This ruling comes after an initial $375 million award in March, bringing the total to $942 million. The judge mandated a new abatement fund for treatment services, awareness, prevention, and screening, and ordered Meta to implement age assurance tools, maintain default safety settings for minors, prevent adults from messaging underage users, and eliminate push notifications during certain hours for those under 18.
