Hulu + Live TV is a bit basic, but still offers good value
The inclusion of the Disney Bundle with Hulu + Live TV still makes the service worth subscribing to. Typically, I’m not a live TV streaming kind of guy. Even though the cost of stacking on-demand streaming services to watch all the entertainment and sports content I want has, admittedly, gotten essentially as expensive as a pay-TV package, I prefer the flexibility of knowing I can remove streamers from my inventory whenever I want. But my content preferences dictate I never stray far from the Disney ecosystem, and when I need a live TV streamer, I usually opt for a Hulu + Live TV subscription. Hulu + Live TV lets me watch the sports I want on local broadcast channels and popular cable networks, plus the on-demand entertainment I keep returning to in the Disney Bundle. While I wouldn’t call any aspect of Hulu + Live TV revolutionary, the streaming service continues to provide access to a package of cable’s most-loved networks, as well as an on-demand library including some of the most famous titles in entertainment history. Our review of Hulu + Live TV The basics you need to know about Hulu + Live TV Keeping things simple with just one package Hulu + Live TV’s top feature: The Disney Bundle The ad experience on the Hulu app is still insufferable Does Hulu + Live TV have Cloud DVR? Free 3-Day Trial $89.99+ / month hulu.com The basics you need to know about Hulu + Live TV The Hulu + Live TV channel package is diverse, including news, entertainment, and sports networks all in one plan. It’s a lot like an old-school cable or satellite package in that way, and it means viewers have to bounce around between fewer apps to watch multiple types of content. Hulu + Live TV’s channel plan has 90+ selections, including local broadcast channels in most markets. Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select with all plans starting at $90 per month Hulu + Live TV will feel very familiar to those who have spent any amount of time with the Hulu app — an app that has an uncertain future , to say the least. The layout makes it easy to switch between live cable channels and on-demand content, which is available in scads with a Hulu + Live TV subscription. The Hulu app offers a side-panel menu with a bunch of navigation options to try to avoid inundating the viewer with too many choices at once, but these sub-menus are still packed with titles. I’ve never been a real user of the old-school cable remote, with its endless columns of buttons that require two-handed use, but some viewers who are moving over from cable may think the streamer’s user interface hides too many functions behind small icons on detail pages. Hulu + Live TV also integrates on-demand titles from the Hulu library in multiple places around its app, which may confuse some viewers — especially if you’re looking for recorded titles instead. In all, the impression I keep coming back to with Hulu + Live TV is that the streamer isn’t trying to do too much. It lives in the same app as Hulu and keeps the same look and feel as the Hulu app. It offers an electronic program guide with simple filters to browse through channels more quickly, and navigation tabs at the side of the screen to move around between content categories easily. The other side of that coin is that Hulu + Live TV doesn’t really have the bells and whistles that some other streamers offer. For example, even the lower-cost streaming service Sling TV now offers a selection of 4K content to subscribers, but Hulu + Live TV still tops out at 1080p HD resolution. There’s also no native multivew on Hulu + Live TV, as DIRECTV and YouTube TV now offer. While the stream quality is reliable on Hulu + Live TV, I consistently find that my feed is at least 30 to 45 seconds behind the live channel broadcast. To some degree, this latency is shared by every streaming service, and there’s little the customer can do to change it. Even so, I’ve always found Hulu + Live TV to be a consistently adequate way to receive my favorite cable channels. Keeping things simple with just one package Most live TV streamers have been hopping on the bandwagon of genre-based channel packages recently. DIRECTV , Fubo , and YouTube TV now allow viewers to purchase smaller channel plans that have a singular programming focus and a lower price. Hulu + Live TV hasn’t gone that direction; the streamer prefers to keep things less complicated by offering just a single channel plan. Viewers can still add-ons, including the Entertainment Networks and Sports Add-on, but there’s no way to narrow down the Hulu + Live TV package to single-genre plans. Now that Hulu + Live TV has completed its merger with Fubo , it appears content to leave the genre plans to that service; Fubo offers a package called Fubo Sports, which has only sports and news channels, for $65 per month. Hulu + Live TV’s top feature: The Disney Bundle While there may not be anything especially flashy about the Hulu + Live TV channel guide or interface, the streamer does have one excellent included feature: free access to the Disney Bundle with all plans starting at $90 per month. Viewers can get the Hulu + Live TV channel package without the Disney Bundle if they wish, but doing so only drops the price to $89 per month. The Hulu + Live TV package with Disney+ , Hulu, and ESPN Select , plus ESPN Unlimited through the ESPN app, is an excellent value. By itself, this bundle would cost $22 per month, but with Hulu + Live TV, viewers get it included at no extra cost on top of the selection of 90+ broadcast and cable channels. DIRECTV offers Disney streamers alongside some of its channel packages, as well, but it doesn’t provide this mix of content of on-demand entertainment and sports with a package the size of Hulu + Live TV’s without renting a Gemini device. With Disney+, viewers get to watch a huge mix of popular content, including animated, feature-length Disney favorites from “ Snow White ” to “ Toy Story ” to “ Zootopia 2 ,” beloved franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, nature content from National Geographic, and much more. Bundle subscribers can also watch the Hulu library in the Disney+ app and link their accounts to migrate their watch histories and settings. ESPN Select includes thousands of live sporting events, including out-of-market NHL games, extensive PGA Tour coverage, professional soccer, college sports, and on-demand titles. Customers who are willing to switch to the ESPN app can use their Hulu + Live TV credentials to watch ESPN Unlimited, including WWE premium live events, plus everything found on ESPN linear channels. Viewers also have the option to pay extra with Hulu + Live TV to cut out ads during playback of on-demand content on Disney+ and Hulu, if they wish. For an extra $10 per month, viewers can upgrade to ad-free Disney+ and Hulu with Hulu + Live TV, but keep in mind: any live content watched on the Disney+ or Hulu apps may still be accompanied by ads. The ad experience on the Hulu app is still insufferable By far, the biggest drawback of Hulu + Live TV is the ad experience while watching the on-demand titles in the Hulu library. Hulu has some of my favorite legacy watches, including “ Scrubs ” and “ MASH ,” but revisiting those titles becomes quite difficult to stomach when it means having to deal with Hulu’s ads. When we reviewed Hulu's ad experience last year, we found it to be one of the worst in all of streaming. Watching the titles on the Disney+ app is a little better, but not much, and it makes the $10 extra charge per month to upgrade to ad-free Disney+ and Hulu with Hulu + Live TV at least worth heavily considering. Does Hulu + Live TV have Cloud DVR? Like most live TV streaming services, Hulu + Live TV provides unlimited Cloud DVR storage space to all subscribers. Viewers get to keep their recordings for nine months, but there are a few idiosyncrasies to be aware of when using the DVR feature on Hulu + Live TV. The one I’ve run across most is the fact that there’s no way to manually extend recording times for live events with Hulu + Live TV. That means that any recorded sporting events that go into overtime risk being cut off by Hulu + Live TV before they actually end. Missing the ending of a marquee game that you’ve spent all day avoiding spoilers for so you can watch the recorded version is a big let-down, to say the least. It’s also worth noting that the amount of on-demand content in the Hulu app makes it important to use the My Stuff tab at the top of the screen to find recorded titles. Watching on-demand shows on the Hulu app doesn’t allow viewers with an ad plan to fast-forward through commercials, whereas recorded titles do allow for scrolling ahead through ads. So, make sure you know which is which when searching for your saved titles on the Hulu app. Is Hulu + Live TV really worth it? Hulu + Live TV still provides great value, especially if you’re a fan of the franchises and sports under the Disney umbrella, as I am. The service keeps things simple with only one channel package and few flashy features, but its interface is easy enough to use, and it has all the top channels a cable lover could ask for. The inclusion of the Disney Bundle with Hulu + Live TV plans is the real value of the service, however. The strong on-demand libraries of Disney+ and Hulu, plus the extra sports that come along with ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited, in addition to the diverse channel package that comes with Hulu + Live TV. Viewers also get to save anything they can watch live with Hulu + Live TV with the service’s unlimited Cloud DVR, and even at $90 per month, it’s a decent value overall. It’s the streamer I’ve turned to reliably when I need cable channel access, even if it isn’t the fanciest platform on the market. Hulu + Live TV base plan includes local channels 33 of the top 35 cable channels, and regional sports networks (RSNs). Subscribers get free access to Disney+ and ESPN+ at no extra charge. ... Where it really separates itself is value. Your subscription doesn’t just cover live TV — it also includes full access to Hulu’s on-demand library, plus bundled subscriptions to Disney+ and ESPN+ at no extra cost. That means you’re getting everything from next-day network TV episodes and Hulu Originals to Marvel, Star Wars, and live sports content all in one place without juggling multiple bills. For sports fans, Hulu + Live TV also includes regional sports networks (RSNs) in select areas, a feature many competing services have dropped. That can be a big deal if you’re trying to follow local MLB, NBA, or NHL teams. The DVR experience is another strong point. Subscribers get unlimited cloud DVR storage, along with the ability to fast-forward through commercials on recorded content — a feature that used to cost extra but is now standard. It’s designed to feel closer to a traditional cable DVR, just without the box. If you want to customize further, several add-ons are available. You can upgrade to premium channels like HBO, Showtime, or Starz, add an unlimited streams option for households with lots of viewers, or go ad-free on Hulu’s on-demand content (live TV will still include ads). Overall, Hulu + Live TV is less about being the cheapest option and more about being the most comprehensive. It’s built for people who want live TV, on-demand shows, and bundled streaming services all under one roof—without having to piece everything together themselves.
