The problems run deep in South Africa’s largest city. Will voters punish the ANC in next week’s local elections? One week before the local elections in South Africa, the pavements and roads of the Johannesburg township Alexandra were filled with piles of rubbish, rotting in the heat. At the Jukskei River, its banks choked with rubble and litter, foul-smelling brown water flowed out of a culvert. “We’ve got way too many challenges,” said Semadi Manganye, the chief executive of Alexandra Water Warriors, an environmental NGO that organises clean-ups of the river and plants trees on its banks. “If it’s not electricity, it’s water. About 320,000 people, according to the Interior Ministry, demonstrated this Saturday in different cities in France on the third day of protests against the cost of living. Despite some incidents (in total the police made nearly 300 arrests), the mobilizations took place calmly, according to the latest official report. The turnout was lower than the 550,000 on October 17. There were some incidents at the end of the demonstrations in Paris, Marseille, Rennes, Lyon, Nantes, or Toulouse. The movement has spread to several European countries, and this week Germany joined in, and protests were repeated in Italy.

Ceuta figures at more than 3,000 the migrants who still live outside the enabled accommodations

"Nothing has changed even a little bit. There are thousands of immigrants who still remain in the city, many of them on the street," stated the spokesperson for the Ceuta government, Alejandro Ramírez, and the Minister of the Presidency of the same executive, Alberto Gaitán. They said this coinciding with the three-month anniversary of the massive influx of migrants at the end of July. According to the data provided by the regional executive this Saturday, at this moment there are 7,500 people housed in the different camps set up, to which should be added those who would still be outside these facilities. "We estimate that currently between 3,000 and 4,000 people could still be outside the accommodations provided by the [Spanish] government. Regarding the minors, I wouldn't know the exact figure, but they tell us that there could still be between 400 and 500 on the street," stated Gaitán.
