McCarthy / SmithGroup University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella noted that the Medical Innovations Building expands the university's research and land-grant missions by giving world-class researchers space to translate groundbreaking discoveries into tangible health solutions that improve lives across Arizona. Garimella added that the facility expands the U of A footprint in Phoenix, creating new opportunities for researchers to collaborate with healthcare, industry, and community partners. In addition to celebrating a milestone in the building's construction, Garimella announced that Banner Health will occupy the facility's top two floors, where they will launch a leading bio-incubator, accelerating scientific discovery to patient care. The U of A and Banner have spent more than a decade redefining academic medicine, training future physicians and advancing science. A recent report found that the partnership has generated more than $59 billion in economic impact across the state since 2015. "The Medical Innovations Building is a home for research that shapes the future, where University of Arizona students and scientists will work side-by-side with Banner Health clinicians to improve patient outcomes and advance public health," Garimella said. "This building and all the potential it holds shows what is possible when great institutions align in service to the people of Arizona. I look forward to the cancer, immunology and public health breakthroughs that will originate here and touch the lives of patients and communities across our state and nation for generations to come." "Healthcare innovation is essential to advancing the mission of Banner Health to deliver world-class medicine and serve our communities," said Amy Perry, president and CEO of Banner Health. "Expanding our presence in the new Medical Innovations Building creates an opportunity to further scientific discovery and promote Arizona as an international destination for biomedical advancement and investment. Both Banner Health and the U of A have a longstanding commitment to improving the lives of all Arizonans." McCarthy / SmithGroup "The University of Arizona, as part of its land-grant mission, is delivering medical education and healthcare across the state, and this building will add to the university's impact in improving medical innovations that lead to better health options for the people of our state," said ABOR Chair Doug Goodyear. "The Board fully supports strong collaborations like those the Medical Innovations Building will house in the Phoenix Bioscience Core." Banner Health's new bio-incubator will be located alongside the U of A Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies, an interdisciplinary research group responsible for identifying and developing novel strategies to diagnose, treat and prevent a variety of cancers, infectious diseases and autoimmune conditions. Researchers are investigating regenerative medicine for Type 1 diabetes, mRNA therapies for cancer and the mechanisms that allow certain cancers to evade the immune system. The University of Arizona Cancer Center and Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology of the College of Medicine – Phoenix will also operate within the facility and support nearly a dozen research labs. Reimagining Downtown Phoenix The Medical Innovations Building is the latest addition to the Phoenix Bioscience Core, a 30-acre district located in downtown Phoenix dedicated to supporting scientific research. The new facility will expand the U of A's presence within the district, which already includes the College of Medicine – Phoenix, the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health , the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy , and the Eller College of Management . "The Medical Innovations Building strengthens Phoenix's growing reputation as a hub for healthcare, biotechnology, and research," Mayor Kate Gallego said. "Our partnership with the University of Arizona is creating space for discoveries that could save lives, improve treatments, and bring new cures within reach. This is the perfect place for Banner to expand its innovative healthcare mission. On behalf of the City of Phoenix, congratulations to everyone who made this milestone possible." The building is being developed in partnership with McCarthy Building Companies and the SmithGroup architectural firm. The U of A and its partners broke ground on the facility in October 2024. Other speakers at the event emphasized the importance of the milestone and shared their perspectives: "The topping out of the Medical Innovations Building marks an important milestone for everyone who helped bring this vision to life, reflecting the power of collaboration among the university, researchers, designers, builders and community partners working toward a common goal," said Stephanie Mitrovic, science and technology studio leader for SmithGroup. "Designed to strengthen community connections and respond to our desert environment, it will be a place where ideas become breakthroughs with lasting impact for generations to come." "Seeing the final beam raised atop the Medical Innovations Building is a proud moment for our entire team. This milestone reflects the craftsmanship and shared vision that define this design-build partnership," said Kurt Nyberg, vice president of operations at McCarthy.
