French mayor teargassed after shielding student protesters from police

Saint-Denis's mayor, Bally Bagayoko, had to be evacuated from a protest in Paris after he was teargassed by police on Tuesday. He was marching with high-school students when they were confronted by a police cordon in the French capital. Speaking to the Guardian, he said the 'small minority' of people using protests as an opportunity to create trouble did not 'justify the disproportionate use of force by the authorities'. Students across France have been protesting about the lack of funding and resources in public establishments for more than a week. More than 5,000 people have been arrested, a large majority of them underaged.
