Emily M. Elliott: Schenley Park wrong place for maintenance

The City of Pittsburgh’s proposal to remove forested parkland in Schenley Park along Prospect Drive to create a paved parking lot for maintenance vehicles ( “Proposal for Pittsburgh public works facility in Schenley Park prompts pushback,” Aug. 31, TribLive) is a serious mistake. It may sound, at first, like a minor facilities decision. It is not. This choice would sacrifice mature public green space, worsen stormwater problems, increase slope-failure risk and diminish a place of deep importance to nearby residents and park users.
