Aerospace engineers will be pivotal in addressing the future challenges of the aerospace industry related to the environment (e.g. minimising noise and pollution) and sustainability (e.g. alternative zero-carbon propulsion systems). With the ability to succeed in diverse and challenging situations, aerospace engineers are naturally versatile, opening up a wide range of career opportunities, and our graduates can be found in leading private and public sector companies worldwide.

Medicinal Chemistry with a Year in Industry

Medicinal chemists have been responsible for many of our modern medicines. Their central contribution to developing new therapeutic agents against microbial infections, cancer and heart disease has helped to significantly increase worldwide life-expectancy. They are experts - with extensive knowledge of molecular design, drug synthesis and the biological function of drugs. On our Medicinal Chemistry courses you will get a strong grounding in chemistry with a specialised focus on designing and making drug-like molecules through combining organic chemistry, drug design and synthetic chemistry, which will prepare you for work in pharmaceutical research or industry. You will also gain laboratory skills, drug-development insight, plus problem solving and analytic abilities that open paths to careers in drug discovery, quality control, regulatory affairs or further postgraduate study in chemistry and pharmaceutical science. Four-year MChem degrees and five-year MChem (with a Year in Industry) degrees are available for high-calibre students with the ability and aspiration to practice Medicinal Chemistry at the highest levels. BSc students with excellent performance may transfer to the MChem up to the end of Stage 3.

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology with Innovation Year in Industry(MSc)

Biotechnology is the exploitation of living systems or molecules from them for commercial gain. Although the word 'biotechnology' is only a few decades old, humankind has been using biotechnology for millennia, for example in baking, brewing and sewage treatment. Modern biotechnologies rely on our increasing ability to manipulate organisms at the genetic level and include novel waste treatments and bioremediations, new pharmaceuticals, the exploitation of enzymes in 'green catalysis' and exciting new diagnostic techniques. In the 20th century our lives were transformed by information technology; the 21st century may see an equally great transformation, but this time led by biotechnology. This Masters degree aims to teach the fundamental molecular bioscience underpinning biotechnology along with examples of its current applications. As an ‘Innovation Year in Industry’ programme, this course offers an opportunity to apply the skills and theories learnt during the first year to a real-world problem in industry, charities, or government. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a 40-week placement that will give them real-life experience of addressing a specific problem through the application of knowledge, expertise, and technical skills that have been developed as part of the first year of their course. This will equip graduates with in-demand skills and experience that will provide a strong trajectory for their international employability. Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible and ideally no later than 31st July for courses which commence in late September. In the event that any programme receives a high number of applications, the University reserves the right to close the application portal. Notifications to this effect will appear on the Direct Application Portal against the programme application page. Please note a deposit may be required to guarantee a place on the course.
